Evangel Christian Academy is a multicultural private institution serving children from preschool through 12th grade. Over 90% of graduates go on to four year colleges and have received numerous scholarships including appointments to service academies. The school has been operating for the past 27 years and is accredited with the Association of Christian Teachers and Schools, North Central, and the State of New Mexico. Current enrollment is approximately 360 students with 230 in the Academy (grades 1 to 12) and 130 in the Pre-Academy (Nursery to K-5).
Evangel has over 40,000 square feet of instructional space including 30 classrooms wired for a single computer network, school wide video system, DSL internet access and intercom. A large gym boasts a sports floor, bleachers, full kitchen, snack bar, and storage. The computer lab contains eighteen pentium computers and the science lab has 12 lab stations with water electricity and gas for bunsen burners. A full commercial kitchen in the cafeteria serves hot lunches.
The school mission is to educate students spiritually, academically, and physically. Bible classes, weekly chapel programs, spiritual goals, and school prayer all contribute to the character development of the students. Service projects are required yearly.
GPA calculations are based on a four point system. Multiple Honors and Advanced Placement classes are weighted. Concurrent enrollment with the local community college also offers opportunity for college credits. The curriculum is rigorous. ABeka is used in the elementary and Bob Jones is used in the secondary grades. Numerous elective classes are available to include computer science, thermodynamics and atomic physics.
The school belongs to the New Mexico Activities Association and offers fall boys football and girls volleyball, boys and girls winter basketball at the varsity and junior varsity levels and spring track. Evangel has been state champs in various sports in the NMCAA in recent years.
The school philosophy is to prepare students for the work God has for them. Leadership opportunities have been provided through Student Council, Boys State, Girls State, HOBY, Youth Leadership Council, JROTC and Honor Society among others.
